Sometime in the late nineties, a handful of hip, young, forward-thinking Calgarians formed the Calgary Alternative Transportation Co-operative (CATCO) with the goal of promoting sustainable transportation alternatives in Calgary. They looked at what other cities in North America were doing to fight congestion, decrease the number of cars on the road and reduce their carbon footprint, and discovered a growing trend in large urban centres of people sharing vehicles, took a deep breath and decided to give it a shot. They bought their first van together and stationed it in Sunnyside by the C-Train station. Since then, the co-op has continued to add to the fleet and now has about 150 members. In 2008 they re-branded as Calgary CarShare and have continued to grow. We are a member-owned, volunteer-run co-operative of like-minded individuals all interested in promoting hassle-free sustainable transportation in Calgary.
